TS-11 SPARK - Aerobatic team White-Red Sparks
TS-11 SPARK is the two-seater, jet trainer aircraft designed to be a trainer in basic flying maneuvers, IFR flights, aerobatic training, deployment of bombs, firing unguided rockets and guns, navigation training, aerial reconnaissance and aerial photography. Spark is also used in advanced pilot training and during the courses for new type of plane.
The airframe is conventional with mid-wings. It is all-metal construction with trapezoid-shaped wings. Wings are equipped with airbrakes and anti-flatter masses on the wingtips. Tail boom with cruciform empennage is fitted over the engine and connected with fuselage. The tricycle undercarriage is retractable.
In 1957 the team of engineers who worked under the Eng. Tadeusz Sołtyk have began the developement of the jet trainer aircraft PZL TS-11 SPARK. After only 3 years of enormous work they presented the first prototype called TS-11 SPARK 02 which was tested in flight in 2.02.1960. A year after they ended testing the new construction. The results were very positive and the TS-11 Spark was approved to be a new jet trainer in Polish Air Force.
In 1963 to power the aircraft it was used a new jet engine WSK SO-1 with a trust increased to 1000kG into the place of HO-10 with a trust 760 kG.
The TS-11 beated three word records:
In 2.09.1964 it breaked the average speed in closed 100 km circuit achieving speed of 715,7 km/h.
In 24.09.1964 it breaked the average speed in closed 500 km circuit achieving speed of 730 km/h.
In 26.09.1964 on a base 15/25 km.
These records proved that TS-11 SPARK was very successfully designed plane.
After those achivements in 1964 began the series production in WSK Mielec where have been build 400 aircrafts for 1987. In 1975 the Indian Air Force procured 50 TS-11. Like in Poland they were said to be one of the best trainers to train candidates for fighter pilots and CAS pilots.
The Sparks which are used in Team have dismounted guns and added necessary instalations for smoke generators.
